hipster shoes

Summer concerts with bands like Guster are like a pied piper’s call to hipsters and their diverse footwear. And when you have a camera at a concert like this, the shoes become just as fun to photograph as the band.

bethany

This is Bethany. And along with being a great friend, she is the face behind the future of youth ministry resources. Don’t believe me? Head over to Sparkhouse and find out for yourself.

dan

My friend Dan is one of the most talented musicians I know. And when he asked me for an updated set of head shots, I gave an immediate yes. We had a blast roaming downtown Grand Rapids. I had him standing in front of whatever interesting backdrop I could find and even climbing and jumping off an object or two. Look out world, because you will likely see this face attached to a new wave of music.

Room for All

My wife is on the board for Room For All. And with such a connection, I had the privilege of photographing the recent Room For All conference. And if the photos from this gathering aren’t enough to convince you that there ought to be room for all in the church, maybe this video will.

artprize 2011

Artprize: one of Grand Rapids best inventions. For three weeks each fall the city transforms into a public art gallery, with venues everywhere and art literally filling the streets. These are a few of my favorites.

How to have a beautiful wedding: hang hundreds of paper cranes, give everyone a candle, and be your beautiful selves on this beautiful day. At least that’s what Jon and Chris did.

occupy grand rapids

While Wall Street started the movement, people are beginning to occupy everywhere. My wife and I attended the first general assembly for Occupy Grand Rapids, the first of many conversations in what is likely to be a long and potentially historic process.

elley plays soccer

Who needs a world cup when you can watch soccer games with super stars like Elley? Look out Manchester United, here she comes.

apples and pumpkins

What better way to celebrate the beautiful transition from summer to fall than by picking apples and pumpkins with friends?

Crane’s Orchard, you are fantastic.

grandville in august

I’ve been taking the bus to work lately. And as a part of my commute I enjoy a walk through a park in Grandville. And I love it.

This is what it looks like.

summer campfire

Backyard campfires are the best. S’mores, anyone?

guatemala

My favorite part of traveling the world is the way a smile can communicate the same thing in any language.

Also, Guatemalan cows are awesome.

keat reunion

Family reunions should be fun. And as you will see here, this one definitely was.

“Is this heaven? No, it’s Iowa.”

poker night

Cards. Chips. Drink. Friends. Good times.

fireworks

Fireworks and no tripod makes for a fun evening of photography.

meijer gardens

My wife and I enjoy slow afternoons at the Fredrick Meijer Gardens. From sculptures to colors to a labyrinth, there is plenty to experience and even more to photograph.

breckin

Have you heard? There’s a new way to spell “adorable” — B-R-E-C-K-I-N.

meow

I’m allergic to cats. But I still love them. Especially this one I found while my wife and I were walking through Eastown.

jes

This is my wife. And she is beautiful.

Am I biased? Yes. But am I right? Yes.

airplane sunset

Whenever I fly I make sure my camera is easily accesible. My favorite in-flight moments are landscapes, clouds, and sunsets.

Yep, definitely sunsets.

new york

New York is my favorite city. I spent much of 2010-2011 traveling to and from the city. And so of course, my camera came with me every step of the way. (Especially to the front row of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.)

backyard

My parents have a beautiful backyard. Especially in October.

colorado

My friend Heather has a cabin in the mountains of Colorado. These pictures barely describe how amazing it is.

molly

How can anyone ever say no to a smile like this? Hey soul sister, you’re amazing.

Two amazing people, one amazing wedding. Never enough photographs to capture it all. But here’s a taste.

Photography 101

This year my wife (and a slew of our closest friends and family) gave me a fantastic birthday gift: photography classes. Ever since I impulsively purchased a Canon XS, I have fallen in love with the simple act of capturing moments as pixels. And as much as I’ve stumbled upon by simple trial and error [...]

The one I’m going to take tomorrow.

“Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow.” – Imogen Cunningham Thank you, Imogen, for this necessary reminder. Photography is an art that is never finished. My “best” work is always ahead of me. If photographs were sidewalk, Shel Silverstein was wrong – this sidewalk does not end.

Everyone Learns From Someone

While I’ve been officially dabbling in the photography world for almost two years, I have spent my time doing more than pointing and clicking. Along with a growing collection of almost three thousand photographs I do everything I can to learn from the photographers I know and find online. Here are a few who have [...]

Welcome to Jim Kast-Keat [photography]

For the past few months my wife has encouraged me to take my photography more seriously. After getting asked at the laundromat, the dentists office, and Great Clips if I’m a photographer, I am ready to proudly answer this question that seems to follow me wherever I go with a proud and resounding “yes.” I’m [...]

Nothing happens when you sit at home

Nothing happens when you sit at home. I always make it a point to carry a camera with me at all times…I just shoot at what interests me at that moment. – Elliott Erwitt Thank you, Elliott Erwitt, for these empowering words. While I often edit most of my photos while sitting at home (or [...]

I see the world differently with a camera in my hand.

One Sunday afternoon I ended up walking two miles from through Grand Rapids (because my bus wasn’t running that weekend). I had my camera in my bag (as I always do) and so I pulled it out to have at the ready as I marched down Wealthy Street. As I walked I found myself noticing [...]
